When most people think of internet safety, they likely imagine a hacker being able to break into their personal bank accounts using personal passwords sniffed from a malicious chain email. Although we can't dispute that this could happen, the end result would be a fraud dispute with the bank, and likely a full refund. No lasting damage, a new account number, and a cautionary tale for others.
What if the online naivet© resulted in the sending of an explicit photo or movie? Did you know that webcam feeds can be recorded? What if the person on the receiving end was not even close to fitting the description given in his/her profile? The reality is that media that is uploaded to the internet or merely sent to another person is forever. A child's or teen's ignorance of the recipient's intent might allow them to be exploited for the rest of their lives. The internet is an awesome tool for education, communication, and fun, but with that comes a powerful potential for abuse. We can't change the offender's intentions, so please take a few minutes and visit some of the links we have provided in the online safety section.
